Group Therapy
Working in a group dynamic helps you to find your voice whilst at the same time learning new, healthy ways of relating to others.
It can be extremely disheartening living with excessive anger and it is common to experience feelings of shame, despair, hopelessness, and a lack of self-worth. Group therapy is a positive and transformative experience. Through sharing your story with others and learning from the experience of others, you can quickly assimilate new ways of acting into your own life. Group therapy is an effective and powerful way of seeing that you are not alone.
Nathan Gould founded Emerge from Anger with the intention of providing his quality, specialist services for anger and range. Nathan has developed his own anger management protocol based on his years of experience supporting angry clients.
All of our team have undergone specialist training to support clients move away from their angry behaviours towards a calmer and more assertive expression of feelings.

Emerge from Anger offers counselling services for couples, individuals, and groups
Why is group therapy helpful?
How we experience anger varies widely and is highly individual. The triggers, causes, intensity, how long it lasts, and how we react to it are different for each person. By sharing ourselves and our experiences in a group – both positive and negative – we can gain a much greater perspective of the pain and consequences of excessive anger. It is interesting to see how other people perceive their anger, with some feeling quite comfortable losing their temper and others experiencing extreme guilt or self-loathing. Some people in the group will be very aware of their anger, whilst others fail to recognise their anger even when it occurs.
We can discover similarities with other group members and feel comforted. At other times, we can be surprised by how different someone’s story is to ours and experience strong empathy and compassion (or secretly pat ourselves on the back for not behaving as badly as we thought!). Regardless of how often, how intensely, and how it plays out, anger is a common and unavoidable emotion that can be harnessed and transformed into something progressive.
Through working together in a group, you can discover the root causes of your anger issues amongst like-minded friendly individuals. This, in turn, helps you move towards demonstrating an assertive expression of feelings in place of the old pattern of angry outbursts and aggression. The group therapist is on hand to lead the group, facilitate discussion, challenge thought processes, and help ensure the group remains a safe space to learn and grow.
What can I expect to gain from group therapy sessions?
Group therapy can help to:
- improve your communication skills
- improve confidence and self-esteem
- understand your own motivations and goals
- gain greater perspective
- improve empathy and compassion towards others
- have a greater acceptance of situations and people
- improve your ability to control impulses
- improve your ability to remain calm
- have a more positive outlook
- reduce feelings of frustration, anger, and hostility
- give you the tools needed to empower yourself
Through group discussion, you will realise the anger threshold is quite different from person to person. Some have a noticeably short-fuse, whilst for others, it will simmer below the surface until they cannot contain it anymore. Understanding these emotions is central to this transformative journey of self-growth.
